Velder Louise Carlisle-Monk was born on September 27, 1941, in Los Angeles, California, to Frank Swendell Sr. and Frankie-Mae Porter. She was a beloved daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend whose warmth and presence touched many lives.

Velder grew up in a close-knit family and shared a deep bond with her siblings— Sarah (Sadie-Jean) Hatcher, Annette Randall, Ruben (Mike) Swendell, and Frank Swendell Jr. Her love, laughter, and joyful spirit will be forever cherished by those who knew her.

At an early age, Velder became an active member of her church community, where she served faithfully in various roles throughout most of her life. She was affectionately known as “Mother” within the church, a title that reflected her nurturing spirit, wisdom, and unwavering care for others. Her infectious, full-bodied laughter and generous heart made her a source of comfort and joy to many.

Velder attended Fremont High School, where she met her first husband, Jerry Carlisle. They married and together raised two children, Quincy Carlisle and Carlton Carlisle. Velder worked for over twenty years at AB Plastics, demonstrating a strong work ethic and dedication to providing for her family. Later in life, she met and married her late husband, Alvin Monk.

Above all, Velder cherished her family. She found joy in cooking and baking, often bringing loved ones together through food and fellowship. She also enjoyed listening to jazz and watching her favorite soap operas, finding comfort in their familiar rhythms and stories, and contributing to the growth and well-being of her family in countless, meaningful ways.

Velder was preceded in death by her god-mother, Joe-Ann Campbell; her youngest brother Frank Swendell Jr.; her father Frankie Swendell Sr.; her mother Frankie-Mae Porter; her eldest sister Sarah (Sadie-Jean) Hatcher; and her husband, Alvin Monk.

She leaves to cherish her memory her siblings Ruben (Mike) Swendell and Annette Randall; her children: Quincy and Carlton Carlisle; seven grandchildren—Jonte, Joshwa and Tevin Carlisle; Quincy Carlisle Jr., Keimahney Carlisle, Ariel Carlisle, and Joseph Carlisle; two great-grandchildren: Quincy Carlisle III, and Jace Carlisle; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends across California.

Velder’s legacy lives on in the memories she created, the kindness she showed, and the love she shared so freely. Her absence leaves an irreplaceable space in the hearts of all who loved her.
