SEAN
CHAVIS
Jan 7, 1953 — Aug 26, 2026
Sean Chavis Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, leaves behind a legacy of love, curiosity, family, and kindness. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Sean was born to Gerald and Emma Chavis in Lake Waukegan, Illinois on January 7, 1953. In 1959, his family moved to Los Angeles, California, where he grew up. He attended Avalon Gardens, Peary Junior High, and Gardena High School.
Sean was intelligent and naturally curious, with a special love for mathematics, science, telescopes, and astronomy. An accomplished track athlete, he held records that reflected his talent and determination. He also enjoyed walking, spending time outdoors, and listening to oldies, especially The Temptations.
After high school, Sean served in the United States Navy and received the National Defense Service Medal.
Sean had a gift for helping children understand math and science. He was patient, generous with his knowledge, and always willing to help a child who was struggling.
He shared 50 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Janet Chavis, and was a loving father, grandfather, and proud great-grandfather. He cared for his mother, Emma, until her passing and remained devoted to Janet, caring for her until his own passing.
Sean will be remembered for his sharp mind, gentle spirit, love of learning, appreciation for music, and loyalty to those he loved. His greatest legacy is the family he cherished and the lasting memories he leaves behind.
Sean is survived by his brother, Gary James (Louise), children: Tracy Chavis, Lisa (Josh) Graye, Sean Chavis; grandchildren: Erin Way, Taylor Chavis, Emma Way, Mary Way, Kirsten Chavis; and his nieces, Gerrilynn (Keith) Green, Lavita "Joi" (Robert).
