Joyce Renee Hurt

Joyce Renee Hurt was born on April 18, 1957. She was raised by her mother, Lucy Mae Hurt, until her passing in 1965. She continued to be brought up by her grandmother, Mary P. Hurt. 

Joyce attended Raymond Avenue Elementary School and Horace Mann Jr. High School. Joyce accepted Christ an the tender age of 8 years old and was baptized at Greater New St. Matthews Missionary Church by Reverend George H. Horn, where she also sang in the youth choir. 

The word Joy was in her name, and she was truly blessed with a gift of creating fun and coming up with great new ideas for the next fun adventure or event to participate in.

Joyce entered the Mary Lind Foundation Alcohol and Substance Abuse program in 1991. She immediately became immersed in the principles and concepts of the 12-step program. She was so enlightened and encouraged by the freedom from active addiction that she began facilitating groups within six weeks of being in the program. By the time she completed the program, she was conducting big book studies both at the program and in her home as well as sponsoring newcomers. "Sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly" was one of her favorite sayings. She was asked many times to carry the message by speaking at fellowship meetings. 

Joyce was a very strong, outgoing, and outspoken person who had a gift for inspiring individuals to earnestly seek recovery and sobriety. She was always willing to go to any lengths for those who came to her for help. She was a genuine person who always kept it real. After a relapse of 8 1/2 years of sobriety, she immediately got back into the fundamentals of the recovery process and was able to achieve 18 years of uninterrupted sobriety one day at a time. 

Joyce attended UCLA Addiction Studies Program to obtain her substance abuse counseling certificate. Afterwards, she established a recovery program in Palmdale, CA. The licensing board threatened to revoke her license due to overcrowding. Joyce handed them back their license and told them to leave her house. She then turned her program into a sober-living recovery center, which she funded with the help of her financial benefactor. 

After her triple bypass, her health began to slowly decline, causing Joyce to pass peacefully on June 14, 2026. 

She was preceded in death by her mother Lucy Mae Hurt, grandmother Mary P. Hurt, Mr. Lark who was like our grandad, cousin George Hurt, cousin Edward Brown, cousin Lela Farrow, uncle Sam and aunt Mary Hurt. Aunt Carrie, brother Walter Hurt, sister Dorothy Foster-Mason, grandson Javontay Moss, and her dear truly devoted friend of more than 34 years Albert E. Compher. 

She is survived by her son Louis M. Moss, grandchildren Kwaii Moss, Keaon Moss, Arialani Moss, Nesir Moss, siblings Carlos Cluise, Olivia Hurt, Eyvonne Hurt, Anthony Foster, Darryl Foster, best friend in life Marisa Villarreal and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends...AMEN.
