Geraldine Tuia, the second of fourteen siblings, was born on November 14, 1950 in Savannah, Georgia (Richmond Hill). She was the first daughter of Freddie "Buddy" Baker Sr. and Mother Mary Burke. Geraldine graduated from Jordan High School, part of the Los Angeles Unified School District in 1968.
From an early age, Geraldine's life was rooted in faith and service. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at the Living Gospel Church. Her spiritual journey was a guiding force throughout her life, shaping her compassionate heart and unwavering strength.
Geraldine entered into a 22-year union with Joe Louise Johnson, from which two beloved children were born: Sheila Denise Johnson-Thompson and Tyrone Johnson. A lifelong learner and dedicated caregiver, Geraldine furthered her education by completing vocational training and earning her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification, studying alongside her god-sister, the late Willie Mae Walker.
Later, Geraldine became a devoted member of Open-Door Church of God in Christ under the leadership of the late Pastor Roosevelt Tuggle. She found love again and entered into a second union with Tapeni Ben Tuia. Together, they lovingly raised five additional children: Tapeni Ben Tuia, Jr., Talia Ashley Tuia, twins Sonia and Sapati Tuia, and Tavita Tuia.
A woman of deep compassion, strength, and purpose, Geraldine dedicated her life to serving others -- especially children. She was employed by the State of California and became a nurturing foster parent to numerous children. Through her boundless love, unwavering guidance, and spiritual mentorship, she created a safe and supportive home for those in need, leaving a legacy of care and kindness that will endure for generations.
Geraldine was preceded in death by her father, Freddie "Buddy" Baker Sr.; her mother, Mary Burke; her brother, Michael Burke; her sister, Mary Louise Baker-Long; and her beloved daughter, Sapati Tuia.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her stepfather, Malachi Allen Burke; her devoted husband, Tapeni Ben Tuia Sr.; three daughters, Sheila Denise Thompson, Talia Ashley Tuia, and Sonia Tuia; three sons, Tyrone Johnson Sr., Tapeni Ben Tuia, Jr., and Tavita Tuia; seven grandchildren, Krystal Colony, Diamond Thompson, Mary Jade Thompson, Samuel Thompson, Olivia Handcox-Johnson, Tyrone Johnson Jr., and Veronica Sophia Johnson; and six great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by eight brothers -- Robert, Freddie Jr., Larry, Richard, Vincent, John, Timothy, and Arthur -- and three sisters: Jenny Davis, Carrie Willis, and Rhodie Carmouche. In addition, she is remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, her church family, and countless friends who will forever treasure her memory.
Geraldine's life was a radiant testament of faith, resilience, and unconditional love. Her warm spirit, gentle wisdom, and tireless devotion to others will be dearly missed but never forgotten. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched, the family nurtured, and the hearts she filled with light.
